The Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness

"Don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something, not even me. Alright?"

"You got a Dream. You got to protect IT. ... You Want Something. Go get IT. PERIOD."

These inspirational quotes are from the film "The Pursuit of Happyness." starring Will Smith along with his real life son Jayden Smith. Those of you that haven't seen the film may be saying that we spelled the word happyness wrong. The word should be spelled with an I not a Y.  The film is a 2006 American biographical drama based on entrepreneur Chris Gardner's nearly one-year struggle being homeless. The film's plot is typical of what every entrepreneur faces in their daily obstacles in Work, Life, and Family.

The word happiness is intentionally misspelled, as it also appears as graffiti in a scene in the film. The misspelled phrase is actually taken from an essay written in 1776 that argued that whites and blacks were created equal. The essay, which was written by Lemuel Haynes, a biracial man living in New England during the Revolution, quoted Thomas Jefferson's well-known sentence from the United States Declaration of Independence, but spelled the last word of the sentence with a y. The sentence, as it appears in Lemuel's essay, is as follows: "We hold these truths to be self-Evident, that all men are created Equal, that they are Endowed By their Creator with Ceartain [sic] unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happyness."

In Mandarin Chinese, the word for happiness is Xing Fu. In the West and in the East, happiness means different things. If we were to put it simply, most instances would boil down to these differences.  In the East, happiness is often tied into family.  In the West, happiness is tied into money or material possessions. This is a generality among cultures but seems to fit into general societal norms.

For Entrepreneurs and Founders, the pursuit of happyness is a journey with many ups and downs. It is often determined whether our pursuits end up in failure or success So whether you believe in the Western or Eastern philosophy of happyness, the purpose is up to YOU.
